Downloadin'

This was posted on Idolator this morning, and, in my opinion, pretty much hits the nail on the head when it comes to the topic of illegal downloading.

Bands don’t make their money back

Thanks for posting that. Head against the van, the best and worst place to be, sitting here in corporate hell, its the place I miss the most. Still buying records and was pissed when I heard yr new one was up (unless you guys had something to do with it). If thats the case, much applause, I'll see you at the merch table at shows as always!

Sort of a related note - is the new CD available for pre-order anywhere? (Save for Amazon, which I reflexively mistrust.)

Oh man such a tough subject. and will go check my local torrent website site to see if your album is up yet. don't worry gentlemen your album will be purchased by these hypocritical hands of mine. I was cooking Alfredo (it was good) after reading that little jiba-jaba. This is what i think. you probably don't care but i do most things for myself anyway.

I motion we(me) spend our money not just to consume and get things we want. I don't buy CDs because I love there packaging (i really do tho) i buy them to tell the band hey man you guys are that good. i buy to support you. another example is when i skip over starbucks and find a hole in the wall and get a cup. not because they have better coffee but because i strongly believe in small business and families. mr. starbucks doesn't have kids to put clothes on.i wish people aimed to support the things they love. not just get it for free

my point being is hey man you guys are the small business of the music world and you need support now more than ever. I think most of us are just ignorant towards it. don't go and get metallica on everyone but hey let us know...

you guys are pretty okay dudes in my book.
my book means nothing to anyone tho so i can't help you. look for my 1 CD sale it will be there i assure you.

thanks august. i think the essay hits the nail on the head because the author acknowledges that most even moderately knowledgable music fans (and that includes the dudes in the band) download music. i do not own all of the music on my iPod in a physical format. but, like you, i try and make it a point to buy records from bands that i like. filesharing is a great way to discover new bands, but as the author points out, people shouldn't delude themselves about the ethical implications of it. in moderation, i think it's a non-issue, on the same level as making a copy of an album for a friend, but left unchecked it's kinda like someone manufacturing a bunch of album bootlegs and passing em around without your consent. i don't frown upon anyone who's snagged our records off the internet, just like i wouldn't frown upon someone opting to buy a used copy of our record instead of a new copy. granted, we won't be making money off of it, but i'm not gonna scoff at a savvy shopper. but i'm not too keen on people that post our albums on their blogs. that's just my personal take on it....

Couldn't have said it any better. If a buddy hadn't turned me on to Torche through a lil' burned sampler I would've never known and of course I made up for it by saying thanks thru buying the actual records like august said. It goes back to the ol' days of duplicating tapes, you give em to a friend to get them turned on to something so you can both share in the sweetness (if it wasn't for tapes no Sleater-Kinney or Chavez for me haha) or at least get them to drive you to the show. I think we're the few non-choades out there though that aren't burning and stealing everything that comes online, my one buddy has a whole booklet of CD's, not one is the original, they're all burned, I bitch at him constantly, but of course he still hasn't left 1999 and listens to TOOL. He likewise gets pissed when I turnoff his favorite prog-cheese for Boris, thanks for turning me on to that one again Bubblegutz. Me and him however do have a compromise now, I can't talk to him about sports and he can't talk to me about music, makes for a perfect friendship in some ways, it means Im always cooler. Keep us posted about the preorder.
