Perfection

“Play it again”
“Those notes rub”
“That’s an A#, not an A”
“You’re coming in half a beat late”
“The tempo is a little off”
“There’s a bit of a pitch issue in the chorus”
“No, it does that part four times, not eight”
“I think your idea of eight is my idea of four”
“How are you counting that?”
Oh hell. Why can’t we all just be Peter Brotzmann?

Moments of Passion During Recording

Best Snakes Show Review EVER!!!

Hey this is my first post on a blog! How Wackkkky!!!! My mind has turned into cream corn because Chris(who is recording all this dumb shit and is a total sadomasochist) Made me sing 3 songs tonight and my throat feels like what can only be compared to Joan Rivers on the nth hour of the "What to and what not wear" awards. Soooooo I feel kinda high!Natural of course!Anyhooo this might be the most perfect live description of this band I have ruined myself for ever for.People have asked me what playing is like.Well this reads verbatium what I recall us playing and looking like when we play.Hey as long as ya all have fun!!!!!

The Studio... pt. 2

it's midnight. i'm drunk. we're still in the studio. surely, i'm not the only person who thinks this is hilarious?

The Studio...

We’re on our final day of tracking in the studio. I’m listening to Ryan play guitar over and over again. We’re about an hour in on guitar tracking, and this is after hearing Steve yell for about 3 or 4 hours. I’m done with my stuff, so now I get to sit around, drink beer, and pull out my hair.

Over the course of the day I have: read the news online approximately 20 times, unsuccessfully attempted to watch the latest episode of Big Brother, accidentally stumbled across footage of a man drinking an entire bottle of his own urine, made a third trip to the local guitar shop, eaten one extremely disappointing tempeh reuben sandwich, and spent about 4 hours staring at the wall. I forgot to bring a book.

Recording is alternately extremely rewarding and very frustrating. I tend to swing between thinking we’re crafting the next Led Zeppelin IV and thinking we’re all total frauds wasting time on this enormous black hole of a project when we could be working towards more practical goals—like dental insurance or a good credit rating.

But I guess there is some solace in knowing that I woke up this morning and went into a studio to make a record instead of going to a lousy desk job. Either way, I still spent the day staring at a computer screen and running asinine errands.

Back in the studio

Yes, the new record isn’t even out yet. But we’re back in the studio laying down some new songs for some upcoming projects. We haven’t quite allocated all of the material yet, but one thing is certain: one song will wind up on a split 7” to be released by our friends over at Vinyl Collective. Our side of the record is a cover by our favorite defunct garage/goth/new-wave band out of Memphis… Lost Sounds. We figure it’s a fitting nod to their guitarist/co-vocalist Alicja Trout, who was awesome enough to contribute backing vocals to our song “Red Line Season.” We opted to tackle a rendition of “Energy Drink and the Long Walk Home” of the Rat’s Brains and Microchips album. For the other side of the 7”, our good friends in Minus The Bear will contribute a cover of their own. Not sure what song they’ve picked, but I’m sure it’ll be mind-blowing. More details will come as we figure this shit out…

These Arms Are Snakes + Pelican

Well, shit. It looks like this long-rumored project is finally going to see the light of day. Our split/collaboration with Pelican is off to the pressing plant and should be all packaged up in time for our West Coast tour with sBACH in September. For those not hip to the news, we teamed up with Pelican for their encore at Islington Academy in London back in the spring of 2007. Nine dudes on stage played through Pelican’s Pink Mammoth. We decided to recreate that moment by releasing a version of the song with contributions from both bands. But the trade off was forcing Pelican to contribute their embellishments to our song Diggers Of Ditches Everywhere. I must say: those nerdy post-rockers really know how to make a song so layered and textured that you can get completely lost in the expansiveness of the sound. They definitely transformed it into something totally new. The folks at Hydra Head and everyone else involved is so goddamn pleased with the results that we’ve decided to release a small batch of CDs in addition to the previously planned 10” format. Quantities will be limited, so grab em while you can.

Tail, Swallower & Dove Artwork and Tracklisting

SPIN.COM release all the juicy details on the New TAAS Record

New These Arms Are Snakes Album Due Oct. 7
The Seattle-based big-riffers unveil details for their third full-length, entitled Tail Swallower & Dove. Plus: Get a sneak-peek at the cover art here.

SPIN.com has confirmed the release of These Arms Are Snakes' Tail Swallower & Dove, the band's ambitious follow-up to 2006's Easter. The record is scheduled to slither out Oct. 7 on Suicide Squeeze, and while music has yet to be leaked, you can check out the album sleeve for the first time anywhere here

Over the last three years, the Seattle quartet have carved a niche as a fixture on stages across the country, touring with like-minded acts such as Hot Water Music, Pelican, and Mastodon, as well as occasional collaborators/fellow Washingtonians Minus the Bear and the now-defunct Blood Brothers.

So don't sleep on Tail and brace yourself for impact, because the disc will surely be packed full of the hard-hitting hooks, somber tones, and brooding subject matter (as indicated by track titles like "Lucifer" and "Long and Lonely Step") that These Arms Are Snakes fans have become accustomed to banking on.

Tail Swallower & Dove tracklist:

1. "Woolen Heirs"
2. "Prince Squid"
3. "Red Line Season"
4. "Lucifer"
5. "Ethric Double"
6. "Seven Curtains"
7. "Long and Lonely Step"
8. "Lead Beater"
9. "Cavity Carousel"
10. "Briggs"
